Functional Fitness

Functional Fitness is AWI’s cornerstone program and originated from the Clearwater Osteoarthritis Study (COS) which began in 1985.

By focusing on methods designed by a physical therapist, the Functional Fitness Program integrates motions that become more difficult with age such as lifting objects overhead, getting up from a sitting position, and many more every day movements that make life easier. The Functional Fitness program is great at improving core stability, strength, independence, bone density, and lowering joint pain.

With the exceptional training and care given to each member, this program gives the feel of a one-on-one personal training session but with the support of a small group exercise class. Friendly motivation from qualified instructors and peers encourage each person to do their best no matter their limitations.

EnhanceFitness

EnhanceFitness is an evidence-based group physical activity program developed specifically for older adults.  The exercises have been packaged into a formal regimen focusing on four key areas:

EnhanceFitness is geared towards older adults with a chronic condition such as osteoarthritis. The class can be taken seated or standing, and instructors are trained in how to modify the exercises to suit the varying abilities of participants. Ankle and wrist weights will be added to the workout when the participant is ready.
