Whether we realize it or not, we are constantly surrounded by noise, distraction, and stress. We are stuck in a daily routine filled with appointments, responsibilities, and short lunch breaks. We revolve around a schedule that leaves little room for relaxation and leisure. With constant pressures and long To Do lists, it is often impossible to devote a little well deserved time off to ourselves. Some of us may even feel a little overwhelmed and experience high stress levels and anxiety and don’t know how to properly manage them. Others may even begin to feel unhappy and lost. Perhaps one of the simplest ways of controlling and managing stress and anxiety and improving overall mental health is through meditation.
Meditation is the practice of achieving peacefulness and calmness in the mind by using different techniques. The aim of meditation is to clear the mind and to focus on breathing. While there are many different versions of meditation, they all provide us with the same benefits. (Click here for breathing exercises)
One of the primary benefits of meditating is that it greatly reduces stress and anxiety. For many of us, stress and anxiety have a great effect on everyday life. Without properly managing them, they can begin to lower the quality of life. By taking ten to twenty minutes a day to focus and relax, you can greatly lower your stress and anxiety levels while at the same time increasing your quality of life. When meditating, your breathing becomes more controlled and stable, therefore causing your heart rate to slow down. This allows for a sense of balance, both physically and emotionally. Furthermore, managing stress levels can help lower blood pressure, which can be beneficial to those suffering from hypertension.
In addition to lowering stress and anxiety levels, meditation also improves self-awareness. Using specific breathing techniques, meditation allows us to concentrate on ourselves instead of the world around us. This allows us to gain a better understanding of ourselves, therefore making us more comfortable with who we are. In this day of age, it is so easy to feel lost. Often times, we forget who we truly are and what makes us happy. Through meditation, we can rediscover our passions, our hobbies, and maybe even our purpose.
Meditation also improves focus and promotes the positive expression of thoughts and feelings. By allowing ourselves time to breath and clear our heads, we are able to shift our focus from stressors to more positive elements. Furthermore, we are able to pay more attention to things that matter without feeling overwhelmed. Meditation provides us with a sense of stability, allowing us to understand our thoughts and feelings. By doing so, we are then able to express them in a calm and orderly manner.
Meditation allows for us to reflect on ourselves and provides us with the opportunity to also improve. So, next time you have a few minutes to spare, find a corner and begin meditating because the benefits are truly worth it!
