How Fast Should I Walk?
A Quick Guide to Adding Movement Into Your Everyday Life
People naturally walk at different paces depending on why they are walking. For example, a leisurely stroll with your dog is probably different than a walk to an appointment when you’re running late.
Aim for the “late for a meeting” pace, rather than the “leisurely stroll” pace. One way to gauge your walk pace is to time your steps for one minute: 120 to 135 steps per minute corresponds to a walking pace of 3 – 4 miles per hour. That’s reasonable for many people.
If you’re not walking that quickly, trying just picking up the pace for short bursts during your walk. In time, you’ll be comfortable with a faster walking pace.
