If you’re like me, you’re probably constantly looking for new ways to better your health and improve your general fitness and well being. As we age, it becomes even more important to maintain a healthy lifestyle through a proper diet and a daily exercise routine. Routines, however, can get a little repetitive and slightly boring. Exercise should be something that you enjoy to do on a regular basis. Besides its physical benefits, exercising is meant to provide us with a sense of happiness and accomplishment and sometimes we lose sight of this when we perform the same sort of workout over and over again. Fortunately, a new type of exercise called Pop Pilates might be just what you need to break out of your mundane routine.
But, what exactly is Pilates? Pilates was developed by a man named Joseph Pilates. By using yoga techniques along with some controlled movements, Joseph was able to create a new and more intense type of physical fitness program now known as Pilates. Pilates is a type of exercise that is focused on increasing muscle strength and coordination in the core muscles. This includes the abdomen, thigh muscle, obliques, lower back muscles, and the Gluteus Maximus. Furthermore, Pilates is also used as a way to relieve aches and heal the body from muscle pains. Pilates also involves the use of many muscles in the body and the movements performed have to be very precise and controlled, often times using contraptions such as the Reformer and the Spine Corrector. Most times, however, all that are needed to practice Pilates are a mat and a positive attitude.
There are many different types and classes of Pilates and perhaps the most popular type is known as Pop Pilates. During this type of Pilates, individuals are performing the basic exercises with the addition of music playing loudly in the background. The music can be altered for each class depending on member preference. Some classes, for example, might accompany the exercises with the latest pop hits while others might focus on music from a specific decade. Regardless of song choice, music is an important aspect of Pop Pilates as it aids in setting the mood for the workout.
The idea of listening to music while working out is not new. What do joggers, bikers, and gym goers all have in common? Chances are they’re all wearing headphones. We have a very authentic relationship with music as it helps us express our emotions. Music during Pilates does just this. The rhythm helps us gain inner strength and we are then able to use that strength to push through the workout. Music also provides us with a sense of unity and togetherness, which can be extremely important when stuck in a room with total strangers while performing the same exercises as you. Furthermore, music is fun and having fun while getting fit is what many of us strive to achieve.
In addition to the fun aspect, participating in a pop Pilates class can be very beneficial to your physical and mental health. Pilates allows us to focus on our breathing while at the same time focusing on the workout at hand. Increased flexibility, decreased back pain, and toned muscles are only a few of the important benefits Pilates has to offer. Pilates is also helpful in improving posture, increasing overall energy in the body, and learning proper coordination for both the body and the mind. Lastly, Pilates promotes a healthy lifestyle in the long run. Studies have shown that those who perform Pilates consistently were able to lose weight while at the same time building and toning their muscles.
